Out of School Suspension Support
Out of School Suspension Support
NLS has developed this program to provide districts an option to have their students supervised in a structured environment while they are serving their suspension.
Students in grades 6-12 that have been suspended from their home district are eligible to participate in this program. Participants in this program must voluntarily attend. Districts cannot mandate students to attend this program. However, districts can encourage the student to attend this program in an attempt to prevent the student from being placed in an AEDY program if their behavior problems continue.
The school districts will be responsible for providing students all of the necessary academic materials for the duration of the suspension. This includes textbooks and worksheets and/or on-line expectations in all of their classes. The districts will complete a suspension support form and outline any special education considerations. The districts will also be responsible for providing transportation to and from the NLS offsite center. Individuals that attend the suspension support program will have separate arrival and departure times and must ride a different vehicle than the AEDY students. There will be no interaction between suspension support program students and AEDY students.
NLS staff will monitor and assist all academic tasks as needed. NLS staff will review a daily social skills lesson that is targeted to address specific behaviors indicated by the referring school district. NLS staff will document the student’s progress each day and will communicate this information to their home school.
